Lisdoonvarna was established in Victorian times as a health resort. Mineral rich waters flow down from the surrounding limestone and peat. The town is now famous for its matchmaking season. Wealthy families began meeting at Lisdoonvarna and would arrange suitable marriages for their children. By the 1970's city people began coming to the hotels in search of marriage partners. The Lisdoonvarna phenomenon resulted in hundreds of marriages.
